All living organisms need water. Water is essential for most biochemical reactions that occur in living creatures. A human can live for more than a month without food, but only for a few days without water. A 2% loss of water in our body cells could cause a 20% decrease in energy level. Without water, life would not exist. Water Content in Human Body Therefore, age is one of the factors that determine the percentage of water in our body. Other factors include ratio of muscle tissue and fat tissue in our body. Lean tissue (muscle) contains more water than fat tissue. Therefore, the leaner the individual the higher the water proportion. Men, who have more lean tissue than women, have a higher percentage of water than women do. Table below show details of the main organs in human body and percentage of water found in each organ. Information below shows details of the main organs in human body and percentage of water found in each organ.
